“For patients undergoing kidney or pancreas transplantation found to have incidental gallstones, expectant management is favored. However, among patients undergoing cardiac transplantation, prophylactic posttransplantation cholecystectomy appears to reduce the risk of biliary tract–related mortality. Our study also indicates that routine post–cardiac transplantation cholecystectomy provides benefits to this population that justifies its financial costs.” (p. 971)
