“Repeat intestinal resection in patients with Crohn’s disease is associated with an increased rate of anastomotic leakage when compared with initial resection despite similar patient, medication, and procedural factors.”

“Repeat intestinal resection in patients with Crohn’s disease is a high-risk procedure for anastomotic leak. Previous resection should be viewed as an additional risk factor for anastomotic leak and should be included in the surgeon’s algorithm for patient management. Although it is unclear why these patients who required repeat resection are at increased risk for anastomotic leak, it does not appear to be related to nutrition, immune suppression, or procedural factors”
